How to get started with your online classes
at Southeastern Technical College

All of our online systems require you to log in with your student ID and PIN.  These systems include Student Email, Blackboard, BannerWeb, IDS, and on-site lab computers.

GVTC Blackboard

This is the virtual classroom for online students. All online classes for STC are taken from this website. It is very important that you become familiar with Blackboard as soon as possible.

How to login to blackboard:

  1. Via the Internet, type in the following website to log into blackboard:
    http://gvtc7.blackboard.com
    OR
Go to the STC website at www.southeasterntech.edu. and click on the Blackboard link at the top of the page.

  2. Type in your username and password in the following formats:

    Username: 43_9100xxxxx
Password: Six-digit date of birth in MMDDYY format.

43 represents the two-digit college extension. Also notice that an underscore is used between the extension number and student id.
9100xxxxx represents your STC Student ID that begins with 9100. This is a nine-digit number. This should be on your student ID card. If you do not know your student ID, contact the Admissions Office.

  3. After you log into blackboard using your username and password, you should come to a Southeastern Tech homepage. You will always get this page when you log in. To get to your online course(s), simply click on the My Courses link at the top of the page or scroll down the STC homepage and you will find your courses listed towards the bottom of the page. Along with your courses, you should have a STC Work Ethics Course listed.

IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS LOGGING INTO BLACKBOARD, ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE TYPING IN THE CORRECT FORMATS ABOVE USING YOUR INFORMATION BEFORE YOU NOTIFY YOUR CLASS INSTRUCTOR. IF YOU ARE STILL UNSUCCESSFUL, CONTACT YOUR CLASS INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATELY. GOOD LUCK!

STC Student Email Access

Welcome to OWL Mail!

Email Address
Your preferred email address will use the following format:
9100xxxxx@stc-smail.southeasterntech.edu, where student_id is your personal nine-digit 9100* student id number.  This address is never subject to change as long as you have a record in our student database at STC.

Alternately, you are also provided a more personalized email address based on a combination of your first name's first initial, part or all of your last name, and possibly a sequence number depending on other similar student names.  A typical email address of this format for Michelle Fairchild (for example) might be mfairch1@students.edu.  This personalized email address is generated by our database and it is subject to change when your name information is updated (due to marriage, etc.).  It is therefore a less reliable email address, since there is some lag (< 24hrs) in the syncing of the database and our email system.  This email address type is mainly a concession to our instructors so they may easily find you by name on an email list.

Accessing Student Email
You may access your new account by logging in with your student ID and PIN number, using any of the following methods detailed below.  They are grouped by preferred usage and technical support priority.

Web Browser:
(preferred method; offically supported)
Our web-enabled email client is called Owl Mail. You may log into our student email server via the web at http://owl.southeasterntech.edu.  Your student ID and PIN are required to log in. The first time you log into the web interface, you will be prompted to supply your name and email address for contact information purposes.  The web email interface can be accessed from any computer, on-campus or off.

Outlook Client Application on Lab Computer (if on-campus):
(alternate method; low priority support)
If you log onto a lab or library computer, Microsoft Outlook will be the default email client application. When you log in, your profile should be set automatically to your mailbox.
You may be prompted to log into the mail system. If this is the case, you should check to make sure your mail-specific username is in the username box, then you must enter your PIN.

Once you are successfully logged in, you should see an expandable (+) mark beside your mailbox. Clicking on it will show the inbox for your root folder. It will also show any subfolders if you have created any. Simply clicking on the inbox or any subfolders checks the mail for new messages.

Outlook Client Application on Information Delivery System (IDS):
(alternate method; low priority support)
IDS, also known as Remote Lab Access, is the portal through which students are given internal access to STC resources, such as Microsoft Office products, personal folders, and course-specific programs. The student may use the Outlook email client on this system as another method of checking student email. As in the on-site labs, the student user profile is configured for Outlook when that application is opened. No further configuration is necessary for student email to be accessed. If you are unfamiliar with using IDS, load http://www.southeasterntech.edu/it into your browser or go to http://ids.southeasterntech.edu. Navigate to Student and General Links and find the link for IDS instructions.  Student must login with ID and password.  First-time home computer usage in IDS will require a Citrix Metaframe Client installation from the web.

Home Computer Email Client Programs:
(alternate method; officially not supported)
You may opt to configure your home computer email manager to include your student email account. STC's IT Dept. will offer only limited support for this, as we provide a pre-configured web interface to your student email account off-campus. However, we will assist you in this endeavor as time allows if you decide to include your student email account on your home email client application.  You should send the request via your student email account to the appropriate trouble request email address provided on the Owl web interface.

Here are a couple of guidelines for set up:

  1. Windows XP, etc.:
A new Outlook or Outlook Express account should be configured for IMAP (receive) and SMTP (send). The mail server setting for send and receive should be stc-smail.southeasterntech.edu. Your student id and PIN should be used for logon credentials. For sending, you should mark the checkbox for SMTP to use the same credentials as incoming mail. Also check the box that says \"My server requires authentication\". This may not come up during the \'wizard\', so you might have to go back into the account properties and manually check it.

  2. GNU/Linux and other open source clients:
In some of the open source and Unix-based clients, the send and receive settings do not have to be associated with the same account. You may have an account for receiving only or sending only. The advantage of this is that you could set up several receiving accounts and use only one account for sending. The disadvantage is that when you issue an email reply, it may return to the original sender with a different email address than the one anticipated. At any rate, you should set receiving accounts to IMAP and sending to SMTP, and supply them with the correct credentials to log into whichever server they use.

  3. POP3, Sendmail:
POP3 (receiving) and Sendmail (sending) are disabled for our student email, so these account settings will not work.

BannerWeb

BannerWeb is the student portal to our school database.  From here you can check final grades, registration, financial aid, and other information

How to access Bannerweb:

1. From the STC website click Bannerweb OR go to http://stc-inb.southeasterntech.edu.
2. Enter Secure Area.
3. Enter your student id # and PIN.
4. Follow menus to find information such as financial aide or final grades.

Information Delivery System (IDS)

With IDS you can use our server software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.) from the comfort of your own home without having to purchase it.  Plus you can save your files to your own personal folder on our server, which means you will not need a disk.  These files are backed up several times a week, so they'll be safe and secure. You are required to download the Citrix Software upon first use if on an off-campus computer. Some classes at STC require the use of IDS.  If further instructions are needed, contact your instructor.  The link to IDS is on the top menu on STC's website or by going to http://ids.southeasterntech.edu.  Student ID and PIN are required for logon.

Lab Computers on STC's Campus

If you are on the campus and would like to use a computer, lab computers are available in the library and the library computer lab during normal business hours unless otherwise posted.  Students taking online courses may also request lab time from their online course instructor if applicable and if seating arrangements don't present a problem.  All computers available to students at STC require a student ID and password to log in.
